You can break free from addiction

Addiction Therapy in San Francisco

Addiction can ruin your life…

and is often the result of unresolved trauma.

Addiction is an out of control dependence on an outside substance or experience.

How addiction shows up…

…an inability to moderate your use…

…an inability to quit, despite multiple attempts…

…concealing and hiding your use…

…guilt and shame over your use…

…interference with your obligations and responsibilities…

…health issues developing as a result of your addiction…

…relationship problems…

…friends and family trying to stage and “intervention” with you…

…experiencing withdrawal when you try to stop…

Recovery from addiction is entirely possible. As a result of addiction therapy, you can experience:

  • A newfound ability to practice moderation

  • The choice of sobriety as a possibility

  • Restored physical health

  • Healed relationships

  • A joyful optimism and engagement in your life

  • A greater sense of purpose

  • A renewed sense of gratitude and presence

I use a blend of evidence-based therapies to treat addiction, but with a particular emphasis on Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy.

This therapy involves working with our “parts” and is a non-stigmatizing and non-shaming approach to therapy.

In IFS, rather than seeing YOU as a drinker, for instance, we hold that you have a “drinking part” and that that part needs our help. Your addicted part is often burdened by past experiences, trauma, and relational wounding.

Together, we work to first and foremost unblend from this part, so that You can see that You are not your addiction From there, we work to help unburden the part from whatever it is carrying. These two steps lead to a greater sense of Self and Self-Energy, which can be thought of as your life-force or soul energy.

IFS holds that we have the innate capacity to heal, and the role of the therapist is, in a nutshell, to help the client access more Self.

It’s important that whatever modalities we use, that we work together to create a therapy that is unique for and best-suited to you.

I truly believe that hope and healing are possible, and that you can recover from addiction.

Understanding addiction

Addiction is a complex and multifaceted issue that affects millions of individuals worldwide. It goes beyond a simple dependence on a substance or behavior – it is a chronic disease that impacts the brain and the entire person. Understanding the nature of addiction is crucial in order to effectively address and overcome it.

Addiction can stem from various factors, including genetic predisposition, environmental influences, and underlying mental health conditions. It often begins with the initial pleasure or relief that the substance or behavior provides, but over time, it becomes a compulsive and harmful pattern. It affects not only the individual but also their relationships, career, and overall well-being.

To truly break free from addiction, it is essential to grasp the underlying reasons behind it. This understanding allows individuals to develop targeted strategies and receive the appropriate support.

The role of therapy in overcoming addiction

Therapy plays a vital role in the journey of overcoming addiction. It provides a safe and supportive environment for individuals to explore the root causes of their addiction, develop healthy coping mechanisms, and create a solid foundation for lasting recovery.

One of the key benefits of therapy is the opportunity it provides for individuals to gain self-awareness. Through therapy, individuals can identify the triggers, emotions, and thought patterns that contribute to their addictive behaviors. This self-awareness is crucial in breaking the cycle of addiction and developing healthier ways of coping.

Therapy also offers a range of evidence-based techniques and strategies to support recovery. From cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to motivational interviewing and mindfulness-based approaches, I am equipped with various tools to address addiction from multiple angles. These techniques help individuals change their behaviors, develop healthier habits, and build resilience in the face of challenges.

Benefits of seeking therapy for addiction

Seeking therapy for addiction brings numerous benefits that go beyond overcoming the immediate challenge of addiction. It provides individuals with a solid foundation for long-term recovery and a pathway to personal growth and fulfillment.

Therapy offers a supportive and non-judgmental space where individuals can share their struggles, fears, and aspirations. This alone can be incredibly empowering and liberating. It allows individuals to feel heard, validated, and understood, reducing the sense of isolation that often accompanies addiction.

Furthermore, therapy equips individuals with valuable life skills that extend beyond addiction recovery. The coping mechanisms, communication skills, and emotional regulation techniques learned in therapy can be applied to various aspects of life, leading to improved relationships, enhanced well-being, and increased resilience.

Choosing a therapist in San Francisco

Seeking therapy for addiction can be a life-changing decision. It offers numerous benefits that can greatly improve your chances of overcoming addiction and maintaining long-term sobriety.

First and foremost, therapy provides a safe and non-judgmental space for individuals to explore the underlying causes of their addiction. Addiction is often a symptom of deeper emotional or psychological issues, and therapy helps uncover these root causes. By addressing these underlying issues, individuals can gain a better understanding of themselves and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

Additionally, therapy equips individuals with essential tools and strategies to manage cravings, triggers, and relapse prevention. Therapists utilize evidence-based practices such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing to help clients change their behaviors, thoughts, and beliefs surrounding addiction. This empowers individuals to take control of their lives and make positive choices that support their recovery.

Furthermore, therapy provides ongoing support and accountability throughout the recovery journey. Having a therapist who understands addiction and can guide you through the challenges can make a significant difference in your success. They can help you navigate difficult emotions, repair damaged relationships, and develop a relapse prevention plan. The support and guidance of a therapist can be invaluable in maintaining long-term sobriety.

When it comes to overcoming addiction, choosing the right therapist is crucial. In San Francisco, there are several factors to consider when selecting a therapist who specializes in addiction recovery.

First, look for a therapist who has specific experience and expertise in addiction treatment. Addiction is a complex issue that requires specialized knowledge and skills. Ensure that the therapist has a background in addiction counseling and is familiar with evidence-based treatment approaches.

Second, consider the therapist's approach to therapy. Every therapist has their own unique style and therapeutic approach. Some therapists may incorporate holistic practices such as mindfulness, meditation, or yoga into their treatment plans. Others may focus more on traditional therapy techniques. It's important to find a therapist whose approach resonates with you and aligns with your personal preferences and values.

Finally, take into account practical considerations such as location, availability, and cost. Choose a therapist who is conveniently located and has appointment slots that work well with your schedule. Additionally, consider your financial situation and whether the therapist accepts insurance or offers sliding-scale fees.

The Therapy Process for Overcoming Addiction

The therapy process for overcoming addiction typically involves several stages. It is important to have a clear understanding of what to expect throughout your journey to recovery.

The first stage of therapy is the initial assessment. During this phase, the therapist will gather information about your addiction history, personal background, and current challenges. This assessment helps the therapist gain a comprehensive understanding of your unique situation and tailor the treatment plan to your specific needs.

Once the assessment is complete, the therapist will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan. This plan will outline the goals of therapy and the strategies that will be used to achieve those goals. The treatment plan may include individual therapy sessions, group therapy, family therapy, and other therapeutic interventions based on your specific needs.

In individual therapy sessions, you will have the opportunity to explore the underlying causes of your addiction and develop strategies to overcome them. The therapist will guide you through various therapeutic techniques to help you gain insight, build resilience, and develop healthier coping mechanisms. Individual therapy provides a safe space for you to process your emotions, address any unresolved traumas, and learn new ways of managing stress and challenges.

Group therapy is another essential component of the therapy process for addiction recovery. Group therapy offers a unique opportunity to connect with others who are going through similar experiences. It provides a supportive and empathetic environment where individuals can share their struggles, learn from one another, and build a strong support network. Group therapy allows for the development of interpersonal skills, improved communication, and a sense of belonging.

Family therapy can also play a crucial role in addiction recovery. Addiction often affects not only the individual struggling with addiction but also their loved ones. Family therapy helps address the impact of addiction on the family system, improves communication and understanding, and supports the healing process for everyone involved. It provides an opportunity for open and honest discussions, rebuilding trust, and developing healthier family dynamics.

Throughout the therapy process, the therapist will continuously assess your progress and make adjustments to the treatment plan as needed. They will provide ongoing support, guidance, and encouragement as you navigate the challenges of recovery. Therapy is a collaborative process, and your active participation and commitment are essential for successful outcomes.
